Kenya: Nokia's Here Maps APP Helps You Be a Law Abiding Driver

With the recent introduction of the speed cameras to further deal with errant drivers, Nokia through its HERE Maps is an essential phone to help all drivers be on the safe side of the law.
The HERE suite of location-based services from Nokia not only helps you find your way with the most accurate and locally comprehensive maps, but also aims to get you to your destination while adhering to the rules of the road and, above all, keeping you safe.
According to the World Health Organisation, 1.2 million people are killed in road traffic accidents around the world each year and a further 20 to 50 million people are injured or disabled by road accidents.
In Kenya, more than 3,000 people are killed every year on our roads. More than twice as many are permanently disabled by their injuries. These statistics need to be multiplied to be seen in the context of the deep family tragedy and impact, and the tremendous health, economic and disability costs incurred as a result.
Huge sums of money are used in medical care following accidents - money that is desperately needed for preventative healthcare. With most people in Kenya employed in the informal sector, they have little or no health or life insurance. Involvement in a road traffic accident by a family member has consequences for the entire household and sometimes even the community.
Most of these deaths and injuries are as a result of careless driving - speeding, underestimating the steepness of a corner, overtaking with poor visibility, etc.
Nokia, through its HERE Maps, now makes it easier for motorists to prevent many of these issues using HERE Drive+ with voice-guided navigation that helps you reach your destination safely and reliably.
In addition, for every road the speed limit is indicated so you're always aware and reminded of the recommended speed, and the maps work in true offline mode, so drivers don't even need access to a data connection to reach their destination safely.
This focus on driving safety has been reinforced by the recent introduction of the speed cameras in major centres, forcing drivers to practice self-discipline and prevent unnecessary fines.
As we gear up towards the festive season, the death toll on Kenyan roads is on the rise, in line with the annual trend. Reducing this is the responsibility of all drivers and pedestrians in the country, and mobile technology can play an important role in helping people to plan their travel journeys, map routings and use navigation to get safely from A to B.
"Nokia HERE Maps are the only automotive grade maps available for Kenya and we are very proud of that," says Bruce Howe, General Manager of Nokia East Africa.
"By using HERE Maps, Drive and other applications, Kenyan drivers can bring a new level of predictability to their daily commute and help to reduce the unnecessary loss of lives on our roads".

HERE Drive gets even better

HERE Drive is the perfect driving companion for anybody who’s constantly on road and the latest update provides some great new traveling tools.

Turn-by-turn directions

For the most part, searching for the place you want to drive to and pressing “Start” is as much as you’ll ever need. However, it’s sometimes good to have an insight on the route before you set out on your journey.
When you plan a route you’ll now be able to see every left or right turn from your starting point to the destination in a very straightforward, easy to follow directions list.
To keep your eyes firmly fixed on the road and concentrating on what’s important, this list isn’t available when you’re actually on route – only before you begin your drive.
HERE-Drive_directions-and-traffic

Real-time traffic

One thing that frustrates any driver is other drivers. And to be more specific, traffic. Traffic could see your 30-minute journey turn into a 2-hour slog.
If you could avoid it, you would, right?
Real-time traffic information is displayed as you traverse your route. If a road is showing as green, it’s smooth sailing. If it’s red, it’s probably time to take a detour otherwise you’ll be bumper to bumper.

Traffic feature in all map views

The same real-time traffic feature mentioned above exists in any map view, giving you an at-a-glance traffic overview no matter your map preference.
HERE-Drive_Start-screen-Your-Car-My-Commute

Traffic-aware ETA

The ETA (estimated time of arrival) is just that – estimated. However the new traffic-aware ETA means that the time left shown on your screen is a more realistic one.
By taking into account all the congested, or clear, roads that may lie up ahead, HERE Drive calculates a more precise time that you’ll reach your destination.

Find your car

If you’re in an unfamiliar location, sometimes finding your car once you’ve parked it can prove difficult – especially if it’s parked in a huge car park with hundreds of other vehicles.
Once you’ve parked your car and exited HERE Drive, your location is automatically saved for future reference.
When it’s time to return to your car, HERE Drive shows you a map with a couple of extra options for navigating to your car.
Tap the ‘point me there’ option to activate LiveSight. This will show your car’s location marker on top of the real world through the camera’s viewfinder. ‘Walk there’ is another option for navigating to your car.
There’s also the added bonus of being able to add photos or notes to the car location, if that’ll assist you later. It’s up to you.
Make sure you update to the latest version of HERE Drive to take advantage of these new updates.

Μέγεθος 11725,3 MB

Nokia is holding strong to its commitment to devices running on the older Symbian mobile OS by updating its Maps Suite to reflect the most recent road updates and locations.

New maps will have to be "cleaned" before the older ones are installed, a process which takes 5-10 minutes depending on which maps you have installed. The good news is all your current map info like Favorites is retained.
The new Maps version is versioned 2.50.103 and can be updated via Nokia Suite on your PC or OTA from the phone itself. To go the OTA way you have to go to 'Map Loader' from the settings menu in Nokia Maps, then tap on 'Check for Updates.'

Where does My Commute in HERE Drive get traffic info?

Traffic info comes from many sources:
Incident reports: ’Incidents’ can be anything from jams on motorways to planned roadworks. The reports often come from local authorities, such as the police or a traffic management agency.
Traffic sensors: Many metropolitan areas have traffic flow sensors that measure the current average speeds on motorways and major roads.
People like you: Incident reports are timely, but sensors focus mainly on major motorways. So we also rely on the wisdom of local people to help us get a picture of the traffic situation throughout the city. People who use HERE Drive or HERE Drive+ can also help by providing anonymous info about their current travel speed.
Historic info: If sensors aren’t giving us enough info, we can make relatively good assumptions about current traffic speeds based on historic info. Many city streets have very regular patterns, such as a traffic jam most mornings and fast-flowing traffic at night.
Modelling: In many cases, it’s possible to infer the overall traffic situation from partial info. If there’s a heavy jam on a major road, for example, the adjoining side roads are probably also crowded.

Nokia to update Here Drive and Transit apps, release Drive+ for all WP8 handsets, and My Commute

Nokia’s Here Drive+ global sat-nav app for Windows Phone 8, currently exclusive to certain Lumia handsets, will be available to all devices running Redmond’s mobile OS when it gets updated “by the end of this week.” In addition to wider availability, the app refresh will see the integration of local traffic information and bring a “more intuitive user interface.” Also, the new My Commute feature will make its debut, which monitors traffic along your common route and gives you an estimated travel time so you can plan accordingly. It’ll also let you know if things change while you’re on the road and offer up different routes if it spots a jam up ahead. An identical update will be applied to Here Drive, the non-exclusive version of Drive+ that’s tied to one country (read: local navigation license). In tandem with the Drive apps, Nokia’s Here Transit app for planning journeys on public transport will be updated with a redesigned user interface.
Drive+ global navigation doesn’t come free, however, even for those packing aLumia 720, 520 or 521 variant (those handsets only have the standard Drive app pre-installed). A global license which turns Drive into Drive+ costs 15.49 euro (nearly $20) in some countries, such as the US, Canada and the UK, and 34.99 euro (almost $45) elsewhere; Here Transit will also come at a price of 1.99 euro (around $2.50) in these regions. There’s table after the break which neatly lays out what costs what where, and you can hit up the PR if you feel you haven’t done enough reading already.
Nokia to update Here Drive and Transit apps, release Drive for all WP8 handsets
HERE to introduce HERE Drive+ for all Windows Phone 8 smartphones
Advances in HERE Drive(+) and HERE Transit
Espoo, Finland – HERE, a Nokia business, today announced the upcoming global release of HERE Drive+ for all Windows Phone 8 smartphones. This move will extend the benefits of HERE Drive+ beyond Nokia Lumia devices to help more people navigate their lives with ease and confidence. HERE Drive+ provides access to global world-class voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation with true offline maps, enabling people to reach their destination safely even without a data connection.
“With the global release of HERE Drive+ for all Windows Phone 8 devices we will further extend our HERE business and deliver on our promise of making HERE experiences available for as many people as possible. The more people are using our location offering the better it will get for everyone,” said Thom Brenner, vice president, Windows Phone applications, HERE. “At the same time this release also demonstrates our commitment to further strengthen the Windows Phone ecosystem with our maps assets.”
“HERE is the global leader in maps, navigation and location services. Its maps are used in huge numbers of the dedicated GPS satellite navigation devices and imbedded in-car navigation solutions from leading manufacturers around the world,” said Tim Shepherd, Senior Analyst from Canalys. “In delivering world-class navigation capabilities with HERE Drive+ to Windows Phone 8, accessible offline with global coverage available, HERE brings a highly valuable and differentiated experience to the platform and the products it serves.”
Updates to HERE Drive(+) and HERE Transit
The step to broaden the availability of its navigation app correlates with new releases of HERE Drive(+) and HERE Transit, both available for download from the Windows Phone Store within the coming days. The HERE Drive(+) update introduces additional enhancements to the experience, including My Commute, an innovative feature helping to improve the everyday commute. My Commute learns daily driving habits and provides predictable and personalized commute recommendations based on current traffic conditions. HERE Drive now also comes with the option to upgrade the navigation license from local to global coverage from within the app.
The latest update to HERE Transit further simplifies public transportation, taking advantage of the Windows Phone interface with a streamlined experience and a new panorama view. This new design is making it easier for people to plan routes and access previous destinations and favorites as well as nearby transit stations. HERE Transit will also be available for non-Nokia Windows Phone 8 smartphones in selected markets.

LivingCities

Today we announce a collaboration with HERE to release of a new visualization called Living Cities. It analyzes and visualizes transit information, dynamic demographic information such as language usage in neighborhoods, points of interest, and bold facts. The result is a fresh visualization, showcasing a normal day in London, Chicago, Rome, Helsinki and Mumbai. Users can view how a city changes through different times of the day and learn various facts about the city, neighborhoods, places, and people. The visualization allows users control and interact with the map and sharing facts in social networks.
The data behind the visualization is continuously collected by HERE through connected devices. This data is then anonymized and aggregated so that HERE can see how traffic is flowing (or not) in the city. With that data, HERE creates up-to-date maps that are used online and on millions of devices. If a road is closed or if a new road has opened, for example, HERE can quickly make changes so that its maps are fresh and accurate.
The visualization was built by CartoDB using their cloud infrastructure. It makes use of HTML5 technology to animate geospatial data sets over time. Data is aggregated by HERE and hosted on CartoDB to be used in the visualization. It makes use of some of new technologies that will become available in CartoDB 2.1 and is a good example on how big data and visualization can provide insight into our cities.
We hope you enjoy it!

HERE brings sight recognition to Maps

Published by Pino Bonetti on May 21, 2013
 HERE_livesight465
Every day, more apps and mobile experiences are integrating augmented reality features.  At HERE, we believe that this technology is going to shape the future of mobile devices and the way we interact with them. Whether they are smartphones, the windshield of a car or something completely new.
Because sight is the sense we depend on most for exploring, and because it helps us bridge the virtual and real worlds, we’re investing heavily in sight recognition technologies. In particular, when we marry sight recognition with accurate 3D models of the real world and live map information, you get what we call LiveSight.
“As AR takes off into the mainstream… the value lies in the discovery it helps enable and monetize” Kit Eaton wrote recently in Fast Company.
It’s therefore not a coincidence that the latest release of Foursquare for Windows Phone 8 uses our LiveSight technology to help you find specials and discover the best places around you.
How is HERE better with LiveSight?
HERE uses sight navigation as a new way to discover and find your way through the world. Sometimes pins on a map are not quite enough, LiveSight uses sight to recognize and identify places around you simply, by looking around through your phone’s display.
In HERE Maps, LiveSight allows you to pinpoint exactly where you’re going just by looking. Just open HERE Maps, tap the LiveSight icon and pan around. LiveSight reveals shops, restaurants and your favourite places as virtual signs on buildings right on your screen.
With LiveSight you can ‘see’ the place you’re looking for, and know which way you need to walk, even in crowded areas.
HERE Maps with LiveSight is about getting you where you’re going quickly, even when there are no house numbers or if all the buildings look alike. So LiveSight in HERE Maps lets you literally see your destination.
And there’s one more bonus… LiveSight in HERE Maps works completely offline too.
