HERE mapping cars are basically cyborgs

Here is a little-known fact. As part of its plan for world domination, HERE has created an army of laser-shooting robot brains. Now that we have your attention, let’s explain.

HERE-car_feat
When Michael Prados joined HERE in 2012, his first job was to take charge of improving the True View mobile mapping rigs that sit inside, and on top of, the current fleet of hundreds of cars that performs much of the hard work of creating our maps.
prados_portrait_smThose rigs are a combination of cameras, lasers (or rather – Lidar – which uses lasers as a kind of radar), GPS and the computers that make sense of the data they’re collecting, then store that data for further processing back at HQ.
What Michael noted is that, “The system of sensors and computers means the software that’s needed is very like that which is used to create robots.”
So, very sensibly, he turned to the Open Source Robotics Foundation and something they have created called the ‘Robot Operating System’ (ROS).
It’s not an operating system like Windows or Linux. In fact, it typically sits on top of an Ubuntu installation and is more of a messaging framework that connects together the different inputs from the sensors and helps to process them for storage. This ‘server’ has no screen or keyboard. Rather, the driver receives reports and can run diagnostics from a separate ‘control’ application that runs on a tablet he can operate easily from his seat.

The open source system had a number of strong benefits that couldn’t be found elsewhere.
Using an open source tool meant there were no licensing fees, but more importantly that, “the team could download the code and set to work immediately.”
Furthermore, because it’s open source, rather than proprietary, it meant that it was easy to tweak the code at a deep level. That’s not something that would have been true if the team had bought an off-the-shelf solution.
“Proprietary systems are like a black box,” Michael said. “You get a compiled application and if it doesn’t work with some of your equipment, there’s not much you can do about it.”

ROS is also extremely modular. This means that it’s really easy to test individual components – they’re called ‘nodes’ – and isolate any problems to that one node, rather than have to start unpicking the whole thing. Similarly, if the team decides to start using a new piece of hardware, say, a different camera, then typically only one node will be affected: they don’t have to start again from scratch.
ROS is also a very mature project and lots of different extensions for even the more unusual parts of the rig were already in development when the team started working with ROS.
“We found that it worked with the Velodyne HDL32 Lidar out of the box,” says Michael with satisfaction. “It was a completely new sensor for us, but there was already community software in place to help integrate it into our collection system.”
Even better, communications within the system use standard TCP/IP to transmit data. This provides even more flexibility in how the system is set up. In the next generation of mapping cars, currently being finished, ROS nodes will be split across more than one computer. These can then talk to each other using simple, standard methods: this will increase the capacity and speed of the system.
“We chose the open source ROS because it was the best solution, hands-down,” Michael concludes. “And now we’re looking into the ways that we might give back to the OSRF, and help its future success.”

HERE Maps arriving soon for all Windows 8.1 devices

Today we’re delighted to announce that the HERE Maps application for Windows 8.1, currently only available on the Nokia Lumia 2520, will soon be available for all Windows 8.1 devices, including laptops, desktops and tablets. Both Windows RT and Pro devices will be supported. The app will be free and available from the Windows Store.

Cities in explore
As with the previous version of the app it is an all-in-one mapping solution, combining vector, satellite and 3D maps, points of interest, search and route planning. Complete country maps can also be downloaded for offline use, just like you may be used to doing on Windows Phone 8 smartphones.
There’s also a long list of improvements compared to the initial version.
First of all: speed. The offline maps load as quickly as your computer can manage, of course, so it’s a lot faster than using a website for navigation. But there are also speed improvements to the online portions. City pages, for example, now load up to four times faster, thanks to the use of progressive rendering and some clever optimisations to the data transfers.
Mouse and keyboard support
Second, you can still use your touchscreen to control HERE Maps, and now you can also use your mouse and keyboard, which is a more useful option for most desktop PC users.
Third, this release supports our latest high-resolution satellite imagery. As you can see from the ‘before and after’ image below, this makes a pretty considerable impact on visibility at high zoom levels.
High resolution satellite imagery
And there’s more. The app will keep a record of your search history and routes you have calculated. When you see a list of places, you can sort them by their distance from you, or by their rating. The app also takes advantage of Windows 8.1 preloading, which gets the apps you use frequently ready to launch in the background for a faster start.
Sorting by distance and rating
HERE Maps for Windows 8.1 will be rolled out over coming days for free download from the Windows Store, starting in North America and Europe.

HERE is an automotive hit: more than 10 million cars sold with HERE maps on board

Today we’re happy to announce that our maps are powering the in-dash navigation of more than 10 million new cars sold in 2013.

stopgo
And that’s a pretty big deal, if we lined up all those cars, we could cover the circumference of the earth.
And while the demand for in-dash navigation has been steadily increasing over the past four years, there are some that argue that the in-dash navigation system is fighting a losing battle against the smartphone. To those people, we say, let’s put the two together!
The fact of the matter is that embedded-navigation-system technologies are rapidly improving and can already provide services that your smartphone could never think of.
Instead of connecting a smartphone to the Internet, while steering the wheel, we believe in a connected car. As the head of HERE, Michael Halbherr, says:
“By connecting everything to the Internet from the steering wheel and speakers to gas tanks and tires, location deeply embedded into the car will transform vehicles into powerful connected devices.”
In other words, location is marrying Internet connectivity with the sensors tightly integrated in the car environment so that we can enjoy a whole new class of advanced services for drivers.
For example, embedded navigation systems can run vehicle diagnostics and alert drivers when they don’t have enough gas to finish their route to point them to the nearest gas stations along the way.
Moreover, we are committed to making cars part of a fully connected technology landscape where your home, notebook, smartphone, tablet and car are all part of the same seamless network. Embedded navigation system can therefore even adapt to each specific driver’s routine and driving style.
Imagine navigating to your destination, talking to your loved ones, and choosing just the right song for your drive all while never taking your eyes off the road or your hands off the steering wheel. We know this future is closer than people think. But the only way to achieve it is with highly precise in-dash controls and embedded mapping systems. We take the routes, playlists and points of interest that you’ve created on your smartphone or desktop and bring them to your car so that you can arrive at your destination more easily (and in a more enjoyable fashion) than ever before.
No other company is so passionate and dedicated to this future connectivity. Here’s to ten million cars in 2013 and even more in the years to come.

HERE (NAVTEQ) Sales of Auto Map Licenses Up 33% in 4Q 2013

HERE (NAVTEQ) Sales of Auto Map Licenses Up 33% in 4Q 2013

Nokia announced today their financial results for the fourth quarter and the full year 2013, offering some visibility into its HERE division, formerly known as NAVTEQ.

Automotive map licenses sales have gone up 33% the fourth quarter 2013, with sales of new vehicle licenses of 3.2 million units, compared to 2.4 million units in the fourth quarter 2012 and 2.6 million units in the third quarter 2013.
On a year-on-year basis, unit sales to vehicle customers increased primarily due to higher vehicle sales and higher consumer uptake of in-vehicle navigation.
Sales to vehicle customers represented well over 50% of external HERE net sales in the fourth quarter 2013, as well as in the fourth quarter 2012 and the third quarter 2013.
Unfortunately for HERE, that automotive success was “partially offset by lower sales to personal navigation device (PND) customers,“ so external sales went up but only 10 percent, from €204 million in the fourth quarter of 2012 to €225 in the fourth quarter of 2013.

However HERE total sales have decreased from €278 million to €254 million (10 percent down). The reason for that is the fast decline of internal sales (i.e. navigation and maps found in Nokia devices): €74 million end of 2012 to €29 million end of 2013.

The good news for the longer term is that internal sales can not go much further down while automotive license sales are likely to continue to grow at a good pace.

Διαφημίσεις στο HERE Maps για Windows Phone 8 βάζει η Nokia

Hi guys, this is Pino from the HERE team.
After rolling out advertisements (e.g. with Groupon) on here.com, we are introducing them on Windows Phone 8 apps too.
In the specific case of HERE Maps, we are displaying locally relevant ads in search results and nearby places. As krox1105 correctly pointed out, in this example the place 'Grossman Iron & Steel Co' is visible on the map and if you want to see what their offer is all about, you can click on the banner to open the browser.
