HERE powers majority of new cars unveiled at Paris Motor Show

Paris - As the Paris Motor Show gets underway this week, carmakers from around the world are launching a number of new makes and models most of which have one thing in common - they have in-dash navigation powered by HERE, a leader in location and mapping.HERE is in more than 50 of an estimated 62* new car models being presented at the Paris Motor Show this year. One of the reasons carmakers choose HERE is that we have - and continue to develop - the best digital map of the world. The HERE map is of truly automotive grade quality, meaning that it is fresh, accurate and reliable.
HERE is also mapping to an incredible level of detail and precision, which we believe is necessary as cars become increasingly connected, and driving increasingly automated, during the next few years. As the only dedicated location company with global reach in the market today, HERE is developing powerful services to support multiple global automotive partners in that evolution.
Today, for example, HERE is providing: over-the-air map updates to keep in-car navigation always fresh; local search capabilities to find the nearest parking garages, gas stations, restaurants and other places drivers may want to stop; real-time traffic information to help drivers beat congestion; mobile applications that connect seamlessly to in car systems and offline capabilities so that routing and other services work even when cars aren't connected.
"We are proud of the work we are doing together with automakers to boost in-car innovation," said Bruno Bourguet, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development at HERE. "As cars get increasingly connected , carmakers not only leverage the world's most precise map data that we collect, but also our location cloud, providing always fresh and seamless navigation experiences inside and outside of the car."
To learn more about how HERE is helping car makers drive innovation please visit us at the Paris Motor Show at Pavilion 3, Booth 240 or please visit: http://360.here.com.
*Note: HERE is present in more than 50 of the estimated total of approximately 62 new commercially-available and concept cars - from around 25 marques - being showcased in Paris. The estimated total of 62 excludes models without in-dash navigation. Today, our maps are in more than 50 million cars around the world. In the first half of 2014 alone, more than 6 million cars globally shipped with HERE on board, including models from BMW, Daimler, FIAT-Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Peugeot, Renault, Volkswagen and Volvo.

HERE MAPS COMES TO GALAXY ANDROID PHONES

Here Maps has come to Android as a beta app, thanks to a new agreement between the Nokia-owned navigation firm and Samsung. Unfortunately, this does mean the app will be restricted for use on certain Samsung devices, rather than models from any manufacturer. We say devices, because not only will Here Maps work on selected Galaxy smartphones, but it’s an integral part of the new Gear S smartwatch too.
The big draw with Here Maps is the ability to download entire maps for use without an internet connection, but still using the GPS functionality of your phone. It’s a very helpful feature, particularly when using the app while traveling internationally. Maps stored on your device are fast too, and the downloaded files come with a search facility, just like using them online.
Using Here Maps with a data connection adds other features, such as live traffic updates, the chance to share your location over social networks, and adding favorites to your online account. In total, Here covers 200 countries around the world, and offers turn-by-turn navigation in nearly half of them, plus public transport options in 40 countries.

The Android Here Maps app will be exclusive to Samsung Galaxy smartphones, including the Galaxy S5, and once it’s released, it’ll sync up with the Gear S smartwatch. Your precise location will appear on the watch’s screen, along with directions to your destination. Because the Gear S will have its own data connection, you can plan your route on your phone, then send the map to the watch, where it’ll work independently.
Here Maps’ launch on Samsung Android phones, and its Tizen smartwatch, is another step in Samsung’s efforts to cut down its dependance on Google and Android. Google Maps will no longer be the only navigation app pre-installed on Samsung’s Galaxy Android phones, and we’d imagine Here Maps will get a prime position on the home screen. Here Maps is also available for Windows Phone, and comes installed on Firefox OS devices, but an iOS app was removed from the iTunes App Store at the end of last year.

HERE Maps for Windows 8.1 now with new features

Route without ferries

Hot off the presses is the brand new update to the HERE Maps app for Windows 8.1. This app is a fantastic mapping app and it just got even better. On top of the updates, the app is now available globally.
"Since we introduced HERE Maps for Windows 8.1 in February we’ve received some very positive reviews, but also tons of suggestions how to improve the app. We listened carefully and we’ve refined the app with many changes under the hood. And we’ve also introduced some new features that you asked for,"  Ian Delaney stated on the official HERE blog.
Even though the app will automatically detect your position, you can now manually change it. All you have to do is tap on the green dot indicating your position on the map or in its settings panel. You can even set your location manually by panning the map or by entering an address.
HERE Maps also features a redesigned city pages, which showcases all the good stuff located in your neighborhood or your destination. Information that is relevant is now brought to the foreground. You can even explore major cities across the world.
You can now change route options to avoid modes you don’t want, such as ferries or toll roads. In fact, you can now add up to eight waypoints to your route and rearrange them via drag-and-drop.
The app is now available globally, so hit the download link and snag it!

Berlin, Germany and Seattle, USA - Today HERE, a leader in mapping and location intelligence, completed the acquisition of Medio Systems Inc., a Seattle-based company that is a pioneer in the emerging field of real-time predictive analytics.
Originally announced on June 12, 2014, the transaction is designed to enable HERE to rapidly innovate in the area of contextual mapmaking. We believe that with Medio, HERE will be able to more quickly deliver on its vision to create maps and location services across screens and operating systems that change according to the situation.

"Medio's technology will accelerate our vision to seamlessly bridge the real and virtual worlds. The terms of the transaction are confidential.
Medio's skilled team of about 60 employees will immediately work on integrating the predictive analytics technology they have successfully developed for numerous clients across industries into the HERE platform, while continuing to serve their existing client base.
"HERE is executing rapidly towards its goal to provide the best-in-class location platform for customers across screens and operating systems," said Neil Shah, Director of Devices and Ecosystems at Counterpoint Research. "With the Medio acquisition, HERE combines its decades' long location expertise with Medio's real-time predictive analytics expertise. This is a powerful industry-leading platform for any business, in any vertical, to take their business intelligence, customer engagement, and decision making to the next level."
HERE intends to share Medio's technology, as relevant, with the other two businesses of the Nokia Group, Nokia Networks and Nokia Technologies, to further capitalize on the acquisition.

HERE Fleet of 3D Mapping Cars Set to Grow to 140

Last week at a customer event in Berlin, Nokia HERE provided to partners an update about their map data collection tools.

It appears that Here is building up its fleet of 3D data collection across the world. From 114 cars in 2013 the fleet is expected to reach 140 vehicles by the end of the year.

This is however one year behind schedule, as Cliff Fox, senior VP core maps at Here was anticipating end of 2012 that his company would have 150 of such cars on the road end of 2015 .

Using stereo imaging, a technology brought by the acquisition of Earthmine in november 2012, as well as LIDAR, these vehicles are capable of capturing 700,000 3D data points a second, or 140GB of mapping data every day to create an exact model of the street they’ve driven through.

This data is processed by 1,200 geographic analysts in 188 office across 50 countries as well as 2,000 technicians in 6 production centers.

In addition to that HERE currently collects 38 Billion probe points per month from GPS navigation users and other partners
